Simona Halep Beats Serena Williams To Win Wimbledon Title

Simona Halep had all the answers against Williams on Saturday, winning the Wimbledon title 6-2, 6-2 in 56 minutes at the All England Club.

It was the second Grand Slam title for Halep, the 27-year-old from Romania who won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2018. She has now won her last two Grand Slam finals after losing her first three.

Defeat for 37-year-old Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion who won the last of her 23 Slam titles at the 2017 Australian Open, meant her attempt to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record for major wins was put back on ice until at least the US Open.

Playing in her second straight Wimbledon final, Serena was bidding to win her 24th Grand Slam title, tying Margaret Court’s all-time record. Williams, who turns 38 in September, lost in last year’s Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber and then fell in the US Open final to Naomi Osaka. She has lost her last three major finals in straight sets.
