The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed DanMallam has said that the command never approved the arrest of the Chief Priest of of Okhuaihe Shrine, Osarodion Usuanlele, the Ohen Nu Koni Evbuekoi of the Benin kingdom.
DanMallam made the elucidation in a meeting with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Benin.
NAN reports that the minister was captured and confined in Benin by agents of the police hostile to cultism unit following an appeal by an individual from the prohibited Community Development Association.
The confinement of the cleric in Benin is seen in the kingdom as an unthinkable, in light of the fact that it broke an age-long convention which held that the Ohen N’ UKoni could never enter Benin, the residence the Oba.
The custom was begun in the fifteenth century by Oba Ewuare, the Great.
The Okhuaihe Shrine is situated at Evbuekoi in Uhunwode Local Government Area, and as a component of the Oba’s royal celebration customs, the Chief Priest must take part in a representative grappling with the Crown Prince.
After the wrestling match, them two would go inverse ways, never to see each other again once the Crown Prince turns into the Oba.
Uhunmwonde, where the central cleric dwells, is in excess of 60 kilometers from Benin City.
Three dogs were said to have been butchered and different penances did close to the police central station before the Ohen N’ Ukoni was discharged. Different penances are to pursue later.
DanMallam said that it was a miserable improvement that the indigenous individuals who were acquainted with the customs were similar individuals who attempted to destroy it.
“Right off the bat, I didn’t approve the capture of the central minister and no one educated me until the conventional offense had been submitted.
“Benin kingdom is one of the most seasoned kingdoms and we have high respects for the kingdom and won’t enable anyone to come and wreckage the custom up,” he said.
He said the order was investigating the issue, including that he would guarantee that those engaged with the capture of the central cleric do everything required to rinse the land and assuage the divine forces of the kingdom.
The CP said that the capture probably been finished by some “enthusiastic officers” in conspiracy with certain individuals from the central minister’s locale to mortify him.
He said that the police had no issue with the Benin kingdom, as the order holds the kingdom and the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, in high regard.
